Before the end of December
- Run the SMTP AUTH clients report in the Exchange admin center (Reports > Mail flow > SMTP AUTH clients) for the last 90 days, and export it.
- Write down every sender that shows Basic Auth.
- Match each sender to a device, app or script below.
- Ask each vendor whether the device or app supports OAuth (modern authentication) for Microsoft 365.
- Pick a fix for each one: relay connector, OAuth, or turn it back on for now.
- Make the change, then send a test and confirm it arrives.
- Check Microsoft’s timeline (Message Center MC786329) again in December.
Devices and apps that send mail
| Device, app or script | Where it is / who owns it | Sends as (mailbox) | Server & port now | Basic or OAuth? | Vendor supports OAuth? | Static public IP? | Fix chosen | Tested |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Fixes: Relay = SMTP relay connector (needs a static IP or certificate, port 25). OAuth = vendor update or app registration. Re-enable = turn Basic auth back on for now, then plan one of the other two.
